How to Activate Parent Control in Windows 7, 8, 8.1, & 10 ?

Microsoft provides parental controls to help keep children safe when using a family computer. There are options to restrict the kinds of applications that can be used, which websites are allowed to visit, and how much time they spend on your computer and other devices running Windows. Parental controls give you detailed reports about their activity. The parental control settings that we will explain in this regard relate to the child's access to the Windows computer using his or her Microsoft account. These settings will not prevent what they do on their friends' computers, school computers, Apple or Android devices, or when they access a computer under someone else's account (even your account).

Activate Parental Controls in Windows

To use the latest Windows parental controls and Microsoft Family Security features, you and your child need a Microsoft account (not a local account). Although you can get Microsoft account for your child before setting up parental controls available in Windows 10, the account can be accessed directly and simply during the setup process. Just follow these steps to get started:

  • Click Start and then Settings.
  • In Windows Settings, click Accounts.
  • In the right pane, click Family & Other People.
  • Click Add a Family Member.
  • Click Add Child and then click the person I want to add does not have a "The Person I Want To Add" address. (If it has an e-mail address, type it, and then go to step 6.)
  • In the Create Account "Let's Create An Account" dialog box, type the required information, including your e-mail account, password, country, and date of birth.
  • Click Next. Click Confirm "Confirm" if prompted.

Read the information provided (what you see here depends on what you specified in step 5), and click Close.

If you get a Microsoft account for your child through the above process, you'll notice that the child has been added to the family list in Windows Settings.
Parental controls have already been activated using the most common settings, and the account is ready to use.

Ask your child to sign in to their account while online to complete the process.

If you entered the Microsoft account you created in the above process, you will be prompted to sign in to this account and follow the instructions in your email. In this case, you will be told that the child account status is pending review. The child will need to log in while online to complete the setup process. You may also want to apply Family Safety settings manually, but this depends on several factors. Read the next section to learn how to determine whether to do the settings.
